Understanding Dyslexia: How Challenges Evolve from Childhood to Adulthood

Abstract

Psycholinguistics and language disorders have a close relationship and dyslexia is one of them.
Dyslexia is a condition related to brain development that impacts people of all ages, creating distinct
difficulties for both children and adults. This study aims to investigate the differing impacts of dyslexia
across developmental children vs adults’ stages by analysing individual experiences during childhood
and adulthood through qualitative case studies: Children vs Adults. This research intends to examine
the experiences of dyslexia by analysing two case studies: Ariona, an 11 years old child and Jerilyn,
an adult aged 36. The study underscores the considerable challenges that both individuals encounter
in reading and writing, while also highlighting the variations in their experiences resulting from their
different life stages. Ariona faces challenges related to academic pressures in school, while Jerilyn
deals with more intricate issues in her career, such as problems with keeping a job and experiencing
feelings of inadequacy. By using qualitative methods, this research examines video observations to
understand their experiences better. The results highlight the importance of customized strategies that
cater to the particular requirements of children and adults who have dyslexia. Suggestions involve the
adoption of multisensory instructional techniques, adjustments within the classroom, and the
application of assistive technology. Furthermore, increasing awareness of dyslexia can diminish social
stigma, allowing individuals to feel more accepted and capable of living satisfying lives.
